Back to school isolatedBack to school Tax Free Weekend starts today in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia. This three day tax exemption starts Friday August 3, 2012 and runs through Sunday August 5, 2012. What items count you may ask? The sales tax exemption applies to clothing selling for $75 or less and eligible school supplies that sell for $15 or less. So, any clothing item more than $75 is not exempt and no school supplies over $15 are exempt the rules are very clear about that. Books are NOT exempt from tax during the 2012 Sales Tax Holiday.

So what clothing items count? “Clothing” as defined by the special pdf I saw online – means any article of wearing apparel, including all footwear (except skis, swim fins, roller blades, and skates) intended to be worn on or about the human body. However, “clothing” does not include watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, or sporting equipment.

Ok, so here are the school supplies that are eligible for the 2012 Sales Tax Holiday.
“School supplies” means pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, notebook filler paper, legal pads, binders, lunch boxes, construction paper, markers, folders, poster board, composition books, poster paper, scissors, cellophane tape, glue, paste, rulers, computer disks, protractors, compasses, and calculators.

The rule is specific to note that the Sales Tax Holiday does not apply to sales of clothing or school supplies purchased in an airport, Theme Park or public lodging.
