One Million Moms wants Boycott of New Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

ben and jerry ice creamThe conservative group One Million Moms is once again outraged by Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.  They are calling for a boycott of the new flavor called “Schweddy Balls” which was inspired by a 1998 Saturday Night Live skit.  The alliance said on its website: “The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive. Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket.”

This is not the first time that Ben & Jerry’s has released a controversial ice cream, like Black & Tan, Chubby Hubby or Hubby Hubby which celebrated gay marriage.  It would seem that offending some customers has become an annual Ben & Jerry’s tradition.  What’s in the new flavor?  It’s vanilla with a hint of rum with fudge covered rum and milk chocolate malt balls.  It  will be distributed nationwide, but only for three or four months.  Ben & Jerry’s claims they have received over 500 emails in the past 24 hours, in support of the new flavor, but don’t disclose how many emails have come in from those against the new flavor.  They state they are not trying to offend anyone, and that fans will get the humor.

“Schweddy Balls” is being actively promoted on Facebook and the Ben & Jerry’s website.  One Million Moms is urging its members to send Ben & Jerry’s public relations manager, Sean Greenwood and email requesting they stop distribution of the ice cream.    Incidentally, Alex Baldwin will be hosting the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this Saturday (Sept 24th.)

What do you think? Did Ben & Jerry’s go too far with Schweddy Balls, or is this organization overreacting?

Everything One Million Moms does is ridiculous — this is people thinking they have the right to dictate what everyone else does with their lives.

Doesn’t anyone have a sense of humor anymore? It’s only a limited flavor, I say, let them go for it. It’s in celebration of one of SNLs funniest skits- maybe more cowbell ice cream is next?!

I totally agree – but when I saw the headline I couldn’t help but write about it – I even looked for it at the grocery store but they did not have it yet. Thanks for leaving a comment!

One Million Moms need to get a life – really: going after an ice-cream name? Don’t they have anything better to do with their time? Over-reacting is a mild way to put it. And I agree with what has already been said and want to add the following:
One Million Moms: get off my ice cream!
